  • What is Cold Smoking?

What is cold smoking? Cold smoking dates back hundreds, if not thousands of years. The process was originally used by the vikings to cure and preserve meat. They would hang meat from the mantle above the fireplace overnight which would allow the smoke from the embers to adhere to it without having the heat from the fire transfer to the meat.

We use a similar method of cold smoking - our clay pots have an offset smoker which contains the fire. No heat is transferred to the salt or peppercorns during the smoking process, which keeps the integrity of the product as natural as possible. The smoke flows into our artisan pottery smokers as it consistently circulates and infuses into our products. This highly intensifies the unique smoky flavor featured in all our smoked salts and peppercorns.

  • How long does smoked salt last / Does smoked salt go bad?

  • Why Mylar Bags?

We package all our products in mylar zip tight bags which will then be heat sealed. Unlike other spice and seasoning products, which use plastics or glass bottles with a sealed paper top, our mylar bags stay fresh for a much longer period of time.

Each package is heat sealed immediately after it is filled. Once it arrives to our customer and the heat seal is removed, the zip top continues to keep the contents fresh after each use. Mylar bags provide a barrier to keep any aromatic property from entering or escaping.

Many of our customers have used our products a year after they made their initial purchase and still rave about the intense, smoky flavor found each and every time they use the product.

  • Do you use liquid smoke?

We will never use any liquid smoke or artificial ingredients in our products. We also do not use any dyes, additives, powders or additional artificial flavorings. We remain true to only using pure smoke and fresh ingredients.

We squeeze fresh Lime, Lemon, and Orange juices for our smoked Peppercorns.

  • Smoked salt vs liquid smoke?

Smoked salt vs liquid smoke is best described as two opposites that do not attract or compliment one another. Liquid smoke is derived from residual smoke that condensates and is collected. It’s flavor is extremely potent and its applications are few. It has been known to be unhealthy to consume and if it is used, it must be used sparingly. When you compare smoked salt vs liquid smoke, you get smoked salt for the win! We all know that our bodies need salt to survive. But did you know that pink Himalayan sea salt contains over 75 minerals our bodies need and promotes numerous health benefits? Here at The Original Cold Smoked Salt and Pepper Co., we exclusively use pink Himalayan sea salt during our cold smoking process, as well as 100% all natural wood flavors. We allow pure smoke to naturally season our sea salt for hours on end in our custom artisan pottery smokers.
